  • Debbie Becher, professor of sociology from Columbia University spoke to NBC News' Antonia Hylton outside of the university saying the administration continued to "suppress the student's speech" regardless of several faculty concerns.

    Maybe its time to rethink the "administration" of colleges, which have hired more and more administrators and less and less professors. What is higher education for?

      Same with my school. It’s ridiculous we are literally understaffed on the professors and the school uses masters and PhD students as professors to save money. Even have a class where the professor never teaches but have TA techie several classes

    It's not the speech it's their actions. The students made demands and the university said no. The university gave demands for them to leave and the students said no, so here we are.

      @DuraDigi they want the University to separated itself from companies/entities that profit or support Israel.
      That's a fairly simple request, but instead they activate the police state and suppress the wishes of their population.
      Just remember that there are laws specifically against criticizing Israel.
      And there are laws barring certain institutions from federal funding if those institutions are deemed to be lax on criticism of Israel.
      Combine this with the police state/militarized police as well as mass censorship in media and comments, and what could go wrong, right?
      Not like we've been warned about this stuff or anything right?

      This was The federal Presidential administration (government) solely dictating an interfering with private education.
      And faculty members couldn't even be on property afterwards to document or mediate the situation, careful what you people wish for, You never know when you'll have something you'll want to speak out against And you won't be able to because you were complacent and complicit in the silencing of others

      I agree -- I have a former friend who was always talking bad about Isreal people... She studied at Berkeley University -- someone in there was responsible for putting those ideas in her head... Of course she is responsible too...     All that education and so little comprehension. You do not run the University, nor do those ill-informed children masquerading as adults. Don't like or agree with school policies, leave, and find a school in tune with your beliefs. Allow those who just want an education to go to class.

    To be fair… they learned that they can just take peaceful tours anytime thanks to January 6th… maybe the faculty should explain to them the history of the PLO and how they had a deal in the 90s for a 2 state solution and the Palestinians shot it down because … well, they dont want Israel to exist

    I feel apologetic for the American parents who are footing the educational bills and the process is being interrupted by religious and regional wars. We can only hope that there is peace in the middle east. May the students re-evaluate and elevate their focus.

    An institution of higher learning really loses credibility when its own policies cannot hold up to real world challenges like this. I know of many institutions of much lower learning that have no trouble understanding that the kids don’t run the show. This really has little to do with Israel/Palestine, it has to do with true institutions vs fleeting mobs.

    So typical for them not to educate the students on what their responsibilities are under their right to protest and demonstrate. These so-called professors would be the ones to leave out about not screaming fire in a crowded theater, and demand it falls under freedom of speech when the students start getting arrested for doing it.

    In fact, the most is disturbing part is NYPD being invited on campus. We were not annoyed by the protesters. I was studying at Butler for the whole week. Most of the protester were clam and do their own thing on the lawn.
